If you are using a portable (USB) version of PlayIt Better, it cannot access system-wide decoders. You must copy the SW decoder .dll files into the portable app’s Plugins folder manually. Extract them from the K-Lite pack using 7-Zip.

Keep your default player setting on HW or HW+. Only switch to SW decoding when a specific video stutters, lags, or throws a format error.
